1. What information do we collect?
Personal information you disclose to us
In short: We collect the personal information that you provide to us.
We collect personal information that you voluntarily provide to us when you register on the Services, subscribe, use features of the Services, or otherwise contact us. The personal information we collect may include the following:
- Account information. Your email address and password. Passwords are handled by our authentication provider and are stored in hashed form; we never see them in plain text.
- Commercial information. If you subscribe, your payment details (such as card number, billing name, and billing address) are collected and processed directly by our payment processor, Stripe. We do not receive or store your full card number. We receive and keep a record of your subscription, such as your Stripe customer identifier, plan, subscription status, and billing period.
- Content you submit. The questions you enter into chat, and the answers and reports generated for you, are stored in your account so you can return to them.
- Correspondence. If you email us, we keep the message and your email address so we can respond.
All personal information that you provide to us must be true, complete, and accurate, and you must notify us of any changes to such personal information.
Information automatically collected
In short: Your Internet Protocol (IP) address and basic request information are collected automatically when you visit our Services.
Like most websites, our servers and hosting providers automatically record certain information when you visit, use, or navigate the Services. This information does not directly reveal your identity (like your name or contact information) but may include:
- Log data. Your IP address, browser type (user agent), the date and time of your request, the pages and resources requested, referring URL, and error information. From your IP address, an approximate location (such as country or city) may be inferred. This information is primarily needed to maintain the security and operation of our Services.
- Usage data. The searches you run and features you use, as reflected in our server logs.
We also use a privacy-focused analytics service that counts page views without cookies and without storing your IP address. See "Do we use cookies and other tracking technologies?" below.
2. How do we process your information?
In short: We process your information to provide, improve, and administer our Services, communicate with you, for security and fraud prevention, and to comply with law.
We process your personal information for a variety of reasons, depending on how you interact with our Services, including:
- To facilitate account creation and authentication and otherwise manage user accounts. We may process your information so you can create and log in to your account, as well as keep your account in working order.
- To deliver and facilitate delivery of services to the user. We may process your information, including your chat questions, to provide you with the requested service.
- To fulfill and manage your subscription. We may process your information to manage your subscription and payments made through the Services.
- To respond to user inquiries and offer support to users. We may process your information to respond to your inquiries and solve any potential issues you might have with the requested service.
- To send administrative information to you. We may process your information to send you details about your account and subscription, changes to our terms and policies, and other similar information. We do not send marketing email.
- To protect our Services. We may process your information as part of our efforts to keep our Services safe and secure, including fraud monitoring and prevention and abuse and rate limiting.
- To identify usage trends. We may process aggregate information about how our Services are used so we can improve them.
- To comply with our legal obligations. Such as keeping transaction records for tax and accounting purposes.
3. What legal bases do we rely on to process your personal information?
In short: We only process your personal information when we believe it is necessary and we have a valid legal reason (i.e., legal basis) to do so under applicable law.
If you are located in the EU or UK, this section applies to you.
The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and UK GDPR require us to explain the valid legal bases we rely on in order to process your personal information. As such, we may rely on the following legal bases to process your personal information:
- Performance of a Contract. We may process your personal information when we believe it is necessary to fulfill our contractual obligations to you, including providing our Services, or at your request prior to entering into a contract with you.
- Legitimate Interests. We may process your information when we believe it is reasonably necessary to achieve our legitimate business interests and those interests do not outweigh your interests and fundamental rights and freedoms. For example, we process server logs to diagnose problems and prevent fraudulent or abusive activity, and aggregate usage to understand how our Services are used so we can improve them.
- Legal Obligations. We may process your information where we believe it is necessary for compliance with our legal obligations, such as to keep financial records, cooperate with a law enforcement body or regulatory agency, exercise or defend our legal rights, or disclose your information as evidence in litigation in which we are involved.
- Consent. Where we rely on your consent, you can withdraw it at any time. Learn more about withdrawing your consent.
If you are located in Canada, this section applies to you.
We may process your information if you have given us specific permission (i.e., express consent) to use your personal information for a specific purpose, or in situations where your permission can be inferred (i.e., implied consent). You can withdraw your consent at any time. In some exceptional cases, we may be legally permitted under applicable law to process your information without your consent, including, for example, for investigations and fraud detection and prevention, or if disclosure is required to comply with a subpoena, warrant, court order, or rules of the court relating to the production of records.
4. When and with whom do we share your personal information?
In short: We share information only with the service providers that run the Services for us, and in the specific situations described in this section.
Vendors, Consultants, and Other Third-Party Service Providers. We share your data with third-party service providers who perform services for us or on our behalf and require access to such information to do that work. They may only use your personal information as needed to provide their services to us. The service providers we use are:
- Authentication: Clerk, which stores your email address and password and manages sign-in.
- Payment processing: Stripe, which collects your payment details and processes your subscription.
- Database and hosting: Supabase and our cloud hosting providers, which store account-linked data (such as subscription status and saved chats) and record server logs.
- AI processing: OpenAI, which processes chat questions and related hearing material to generate answers and reports. See "Do we offer artificial intelligence-based products?"
- Analytics: GoatCounter, which counts page views without cookies and without storing IP addresses.
We also may need to share your personal information in the following situations:
- Business Transfers. We may share or transfer your information in connection with, or during negotiations of, any merger, sale of company assets, financing, or acquisition of all or a portion of our business to another company.
- Legal Requirements. We may disclose your information where required to do so by law or in response to valid requests by public authorities.
We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it with advertisers, data brokers, or social networks.
5. Do we use cookies and other tracking technologies?
In short: We use only the cookies needed to keep you signed in and to process payments. We do not use advertising or tracking cookies.
Our authentication provider sets cookies and similar browser storage that are strictly necessary to keep you signed in and to secure your account. When you check out or manage your subscription, you are taken to pages hosted by Stripe, which sets its own cookies for payment processing and fraud prevention under its own privacy policy. The Services may also store small settings in your browser's local storage, such as your preferences, which never leave your device.
Our analytics provider, GoatCounter, does not use cookies and does not track you across websites. We do not permit third parties to use tracking technologies on our Services for advertising.
Most web browsers are set to accept cookies by default. If you choose to remove or reject cookies, you will not be able to stay signed in to your account.
6. Do we offer artificial intelligence-based products?
In short: Yes. Chat and reports are powered by a third-party AI model.
As part of our Services, we offer features powered by artificial intelligence (collectively, "AI Products"), namely answering questions about legislative hearings and generating reports. The terms in this Privacy Notice govern your use of the AI Products within our Services.
Use of AI technologies
We provide the AI Products through a third-party service provider ("AI Service Provider"), OpenAI. The questions you enter, along with excerpts of public hearing transcripts and legislative records, are sent to the AI Service Provider to generate an answer. We do not send your email address, password, or payment information to the AI Service Provider. Under its API terms, OpenAI does not use data submitted through its API to train its models. You must not use the AI Products in any way that violates the terms or policies of the AI Service Provider, and you should not enter sensitive personal information into chat.
7. Is your information transferred internationally?
In short: Your information is processed in the United States.
Our servers and service providers are located in the United States. If you are accessing our Services from outside the United States, please be aware that your information will be transferred to, stored by, and processed in the United States, which may not have data protection laws as comprehensive as those in your country. We will take reasonable measures to protect your personal information in accordance with this Privacy Notice and applicable law.
8. How long do we keep your information?
In short: We keep your information for as long as necessary to fulfill the purposes outlined in this Privacy Notice unless otherwise required by law.
- Account information is kept for as long as you have an account with us.
- Saved chats and reports are kept until you delete them or delete your account.
- Subscription and transaction records are kept for as long as required for tax, accounting, and other legal requirements, which may extend beyond the life of your account.
- Server logs are kept for a limited period for security and troubleshooting and are then deleted in the ordinary course.
When we have no ongoing legitimate business need to process your personal information, we will either delete or anonymize such information, or, if this is not possible (for example, because your personal information has been stored in backup archives), then we will securely store your personal information and isolate it from any further processing until deletion is possible.
9. How do we keep your information safe?
In short: We aim to protect your personal information through a system of organizational and technical security measures.
We have implemented appropriate and reasonable technical and organizational security measures designed to protect the security of any personal information we process, including encrypting data in transit, relying on specialized providers for passwords and payment details, and restricting access so that each account can read only its own data. However, despite our safeguards and efforts to secure your information, no electronic transmission over the Internet or information storage technology can be guaranteed to be 100% secure, so we cannot promise or guarantee that hackers, cybercriminals, or other unauthorized third parties will not be able to defeat our security and improperly collect, access, steal, or modify your information. Although we will do our best to protect your personal information, transmission of personal information to and from our Services is at your own risk. You should only access the Services within a secure environment.
10. Do we collect information from minors?
In short: We do not knowingly collect data from or market to children under 18 years of age or the equivalent age as specified by law in your jurisdiction.
We do not knowingly collect, solicit data from, or market to children under 18 years of age or the equivalent age as specified by law in your jurisdiction, nor do we knowingly sell such personal information. By using the Services, you represent that you are at least 18 or the equivalent age as specified by law in your jurisdiction. If we learn that personal information from users less than 18 years of age has been collected, we will deactivate the account and take reasonable measures to promptly delete such data from our records. If you become aware of any data we may have collected from children under age 18, please contact us at info@thesession.watch.
11. What are your privacy rights?
In short: Depending on your state of residence in the US or in some regions, such as the European Economic Area (EEA), United Kingdom (UK), Switzerland, and Canada, you have rights that allow you greater access to and control over your personal information. You may review, change, or terminate your account at any time.
In some regions (like the EEA, UK, Switzerland, and Canada), you have certain rights under applicable data protection laws. These may include the right (i) to request access and obtain a copy of your personal information, (ii) to request rectification or erasure; (iii) to restrict the processing of your personal information; (iv) if applicable, to data portability; and (v) not to be subject to automated decision-making. We do not make decisions that produce legal or similarly significant effects about you solely by automated means. In certain circumstances, you may also have the right to object to the processing of your personal information. You can make such a request by contacting us by using the contact details provided in the section "How can you contact us about this notice?" below.
We will consider and act upon any request in accordance with applicable data protection laws.
If you are located in the EEA or UK and you believe we are unlawfully processing your personal information, you also have the right to complain to your Member State data protection authority or UK data protection authority.
If you are located in Switzerland, you may contact the Federal Data Protection and Information Commissioner.
Withdrawing your consent: If we are relying on your consent to process your personal information, which may be express and/or implied consent depending on the applicable law, you have the right to withdraw your consent at any time by contacting us using the contact details provided in the section "How can you contact us about this notice?" below. However, please note that this will not affect the lawfulness of the processing before its withdrawal nor, when applicable law allows, will it affect the processing of your personal information conducted in reliance on lawful processing grounds other than consent.
Account information
If you would at any time like to review or change the information in your account or terminate your account, you can:
- Log in to your account page to manage your account and subscription, and delete saved chats from the chat page.
- Contact us using the contact information provided.
Upon your request to terminate your account, we will deactivate or delete your account and information from our active databases. However, we may retain some information in our files to prevent fraud, troubleshoot problems, assist with any investigations, enforce our legal terms and/or comply with applicable legal requirements.
If you have questions or comments about your privacy rights, you may email us at info@thesession.watch.
12. Controls for do-not-track features
Most web browsers and some mobile operating systems and mobile applications include a Do-Not-Track ("DNT") feature or setting you can activate to signal your privacy preference not to have data about your online browsing activities monitored and collected. At this stage, no uniform technology standard for recognizing and implementing DNT signals has been finalized. As such, we do not currently respond to DNT browser signals. Because we do not track you across websites or use your information for targeted advertising, there is nothing for such a signal to switch off.
Global Privacy Control: We do not sell or share personal information for targeted advertising. If you use a browser or extension that sends a Global Privacy Control (GPC) signal, we will treat it as a valid opt-out request under applicable state privacy laws, including the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA).

In short: If you are a resident of California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maryland, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Oregon, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, or Virginia, you may have the right to request access to and receive details about the personal information we maintain about you and how we have processed it, correct inaccuracies, get a copy of, or delete your personal information. You may also have the right to withdraw your consent to our processing of your personal information. These rights may be limited in some circumstances by applicable law.
